Quill's drawings!
« on: Oct 23, 2009, 04:16:10 PM »
Hah! I thought I'd show this because I've had a single person say it was nice. Ah well, I draw for fun:
(It's an arch Lich)

One thing I know, is the bottom half isn't to proportion. Ah well. I had fun drawing it!

Thanks. I did it for a slideshow based on a new game (for a fan site), and I was surprised when they asked me. I never really said I could draw at all

Alrighty. This is not technically a drawing, but it's a project I'm working on. You know I've been going on about the Protomen?
Well I've started to write down all their music in sheet music form. I've got official backing from them, and they actually sent me one of their songs in sheet music form (they play it from memory, and the sheet music doesn't exist so I'm doing the only copy) so they are respecting what I'm doing. This is how much I've done in a week's work:

http://img405.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=hoperidesalonetest1.png

It's the first 3 minutes or less of the first song in the rock opera. It might be completely wrong but it's being under scrutiny of one of them :D

Interesting, Are you using sybelius for the images?

unfortunatly, I don't have the money. I'm using Muse Score, which is like Sibalius, but free.

Nice picture of an arch Lich (though I haven't a very good idea what an arch Lich is). As long as it was fun to draw, I would consider a success! So good job

A lich is like a skeleton/zombie in fantasy, but is like a leader and is maaaaagical =D

I've got a few more drawings that I've done. The one of a woman was a free-commission asked for by a friend. Hope you know who it is.

This one was a christmas present to a friend:

Nice pics. It's appears you enjoy drawing stuff in the fantasy-domain, eh?

I think you should try adding some backgrounds to them to give a more complete feel!

I've tried backgrounds... MANY times. I completely failed everytime. I have honestly not improved my backgrounds since I was 7.

Also I'm definatly a fantasy fan, since none of my drawings aren't either from now or fantasy ^^

What part of backgrounds do you have a rough time on? Maybe a little feedback can help improve it a bit. Generally, it usually just takes a little courage to keep practicing in order to improve a skill set.

Well, just backgrounds in general. I think it's mainly due to the lack of core artistic skill. For example, this is an image done in paint I did, and my hand drawn backgrounds aren't much better:

I did it in Windows 7 Paint, and I did it in a competition with a friend of who can draw "Is it a bird, is it a plane? No it's SUPERMAN!"

Well here are my suggestions:

First off, it's usually easier to draw with some sort of reference image. Usually, as long as you don't trace/copy the image line for line, you can pass it as your own.

Second, perspectives can make any background look better. A super easy trick to imitate perspectives is to use varying stroke sizes. So in Paint, when you color close to the "camera," use a slightly larger brush size. As you move away from the "camera," use smaller and smaller brush sizes.

Here's an example making use of those two tips:

Ah, one more point worth mentioning. The key is to not get too hung over realism. Realism does not necessarily equate to good art. Art has no logic, so don't let normal reasoning hinder your flow why creating.

This is why I avoid the eraser since it completely breaks the flow of the creative process. I wait until the whole thing is complete before going in and making changes so that I can let it all out unhampered by doubt. This is a concept that self-proclaimed "perfectionists" should overcome if they really want to enjoy the artistic process

Well I draw for fun anyway, which is why the way I draw things is half way between a manga style (which is what I followed when I started a few years ago) to a cartoon-ey style (since I prefer it), so realism isn't a problem for me. It's just the way I've done a background, like on an image I'll upload soon, it's just too simplistic.

But thanks for the tips and I'll try them out!

I meant realism in its most general definition in which people are unsatisfied in the middle of their work due to proportion or positional problems. I slipped it in because I noticed some erase marks on the previous pictures you posted. Obviously, I don't know if it's a problem for you, but I know that it sometimes causes people to drop perfectly valid works due to unnecessary "perfectionist" mindsets.

Regardless, I'll be waiting for your next piece!

Well picture number one:
Just because the staff wasn't straight at all, like an 135 degree angle instead of 180 degree.

Picture number 2:
Was a commission, so I had to do some minor alterations so my friend would be happy. Alright, the commission was only for 50p which I'm doing more for. ^^

Picture number 3:
Just needed to change the wings slightly for that more "butterfly" feel =D

BUt anyway, about to upload more pictures that are Sci-Fi!!!!!

Edit: Since my sketchbook has gone missing, I can't upload these two robots based off the Protomen (which I STILL am listening to >_<) but once I find them, they'll be right up here!
