dunno about not being fair to the bees - a cuckoo bird hatchling actually pushes the original bird's egg or young offspring out of the nest in the first few hours after hatching. Thus it gets the full treatment of both foster-parents without any competitors.
As for Yasu - she still looks cute to me.

I heard a pretty biased (lol!) description-cross-stroy about cukoos and now im freaked out by them... O.O;;

@pretty: Yeah, I heard of similar stories regarding birds. I can't remember the species, but there's a bird that does the same as you've described...except to their own siblings. They keep fighting over the food until only one chick survives.

@Ameides: Heh...could you perhaps give us a little more detail about what you heard?

I know that hayna puppies try to kill each other right after birth and their mother has a hard time keeping them apart. Not sure what kind of bird has hatchlings that would kill their own brothers, but I do know that owls and some other preadators have a problem with eggs hatching at different days. The older hatchlings are bigger and stronger and are likely to eat all the food to the younger ones, unless it's rodent-year, when there's food enough to spare.

I love the way you did the second panel.

@pretty: Yeah, mother nature can be harsh...but sometimes there just isn't enough resources to support the population...humans being an exception >.> We're like leeches who are breaking all the rules =P

@trombonefellow: Thank you very much. By the way...do you mean Yasu or the grayish background behind her...?
by trombonefellow @ 27 June 2007 11:09 pm
Yasu.
by Jason @ 27 June 2007 11:17 pm
@trombone: Yeah, that's what I thought. I originally typed up that I thought Yasu's neck is a little long there, but I wasn't sure what you were referring to so I retracted that comment...
